Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
