This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
