Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
