Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
